YouTuber Spotlight: Joseph Harwood

Share your story of becoming a YouTuber. How did you get started?

I really fell in love with blogging when I was about 17. I was part of a daily collective channel of LGBTQ people called 5AT. We discussed our individual stories and view points on a variety of topics and it was pretty amazing. When I turned 21 I decided to start my first business and return to Youtube. I thought Youtube would be an awesome way of showcasing my techniques so I started from scratch. I began working on basic 'how-to' content, I wanted it to be unique and showcase makeup in a way that was more like painting than applying cosmetics. Later I started my own version of a collaboration channel called Perfect Androgyny which has been a fun side project that pays homage to the original channel I started on.

What do you love most about creating videos?

I really love painting, I love how you can transform a face with just simple products and techniques, but by far the most powerful part of making videos is when I have spoken about personal topics and it's really related to people. I think that's the most rewarding thing you don't even think about, it's a two way process and that's the part I enjoy the most.

Describe your lifestyle (what makes you choose the things you reviews) and a few of your favorite brands. Who do you wish to work with in the future on a collaboration?

I'm a makeup artist and health enthusiast, I love working in the fashion industry and that's definitely where my interests lie. My absolute guilty passion though is video games, the main inspiration behind my aesthetic came from playing video games as a kid. I really want to start a new youtube all about gaming just as a fun side project, I think makeup can be quite hard work sometimes and this would be totally refreshing and fun new venture to try for 2015.

I am really interested in brand new cosmetics tools and companies, I think that's a niche that hasn't been covered yet and I want to showcase invasive and non invasive beauty treatments, brand new developments and innovative tools. I am currently filming a series with a surgeon on Harley Street on beauty treatments which I'm excited to launch, and I have worked with some really awesome brands such as Viss and Artis Brushes on content that have shown brand new beauty tools such as ergonomic makeup brushes, home radio frequency devices and IPL. That's really what really interests me, I want to see where beauty is going next and I love showcasing new concepts. The brands I would love to work with are definitely under Loreal Luxe, Clarins and Estee Lauder. I have worked with a few before in my makeup work but it would be awesome to also showcase or work with them as a youtube blogger.

What is your current setup for shooting videos?

I work in a studio set up against a flat white wall. I originally filmed with 4 soft boxes (daylight bulbs), but what I found looks much more cleaner is using 2 soft boxes and one ring light that sits facing down above you. I also use a canon 650d and film on 100ISO, with an external microphone. I edit with an iMac and I use Adobe Premiere, After Effects and Photoshop. Sometimes I use backdrops and I have fabric collapsing features in a few colours.

What advice would you give to YouTubers just starting out?

Get good lighting and try and borrow a good computer with fast ram because the worst thing in the world is editing, and if you have to edit lighting right and getting all the colours correct it actually takes the most insane time to export. I used to have to leave my old laptop on for two days to render in HD, it was completely and utterly a nightmare. The best thing I ever did was get a computer for editing so borrow beg and steal one. Also do something new and original there is so much content on youtube that unless you have a different approach to it, you're not going to stand out. Also be yourself, it takes a lot of time to get comfortable in front of a camera, I always think omg my neighbors will hear me and think I'm schizophrenic or something but you have to get over that and just show your best attributes.

What do you like best about FameBit?

I love being introduced to new brands, I think it's an excellent format and I love the support. Also the collaboration side of things is really fun too!
