I've always been a lover of beauty and fashion. I knew that there were plenty of content creators already on YouTube when I got started back in 2013, but I felt like I could still offer the community something unique. One of the main reasons I started was for the social aspect of it; I had just moved to a small town in Kansas where I knew absolutely no one. YouTube gave me an outlet to find people who liked the same things I did. I started off strictly making videos about makeup, but eventually my channel branched into plus-size fashion, as well as body-confidence topics.
It sounds a little cheesy, but my viewers are my greatest inspiration. With every email and comment comes an overwhelming sense of pride that there could be such lovely, intelligent human beings taking the time to watch my videos. That keeps me itching to make bigger and better content all of the time! It's been a little over a year and a half and I still haven't hit that video slump, which I attribute to the fact that I have fantastic subscribers. As far as YouTubers, there are so many that I watch daily, but I would say one of my greatest inspirations is Dani from coffeebreakwithdani. We started around the same time and were friends from the start. To this day she is one of the creators I admire most. The reason viewers love her is she is 100% herself in her videos; it's so refreshing to see that someone can let their personality shine through while still making fantastic content.
I started YouTube as a social outlet and it's still my favorite thing about making videos. It certainly doesn't feel like I'm in my bedroom talking to myself, though technically I am, and the neighbors probably think I'm a bit off. From the moment that people began commenting on videos it felt like we were having this open conversation that I wanted to continue. I have the opportunity to share my love of beauty and fashion while feeling like I'm chatting with my best friend. It's fantastic!
For me, when I'm considering products for review, I make sure it's something that I would tell my mom about. She's always curious about the latest and greatest - as are my viewers - and I would never tell her about something I didn't truly believe she would enjoy. Honesty is the best policy when it comes to reviews! I try to stay on top of what's current and what others might have questions about.
My favorite brands right now are Stila, Nume and Wet Seal +. They are just fantastic to work with and provide consistently great products that I want to go back to as the consumer. I think my dream collaboration would be working with Charlotte Tilbury. Her cosmetics line recently came to the United States and there has been nothing but positive feedback on everything. There are brands that reach out to collaborate that I absolutely fangirl over, and Charlotte Tilbury would be one of them.
FameBit completely changed creating YouTube videos for me. I was provided with a fantastic resource to talk with sponsors and brands who needed people like myself to test out and review products. It's a really simple interaction: I tell them what I can provide for their brand and they decide whether or not I would be the right fit. I've created lasting relationships with brands I trust and wouldn't have had the opportunity to work with otherwise. Plus I love the new points system - you can redeem things like a Macbook Pro with points you earn just for making content you were already creating. That's way too cool to me.
Where I live Fall has begun, so I'm loving my Pumpkin Spice Lattes; I live for the Fall drinks at Starbucks. My favorite movie is either Casablanca or A Night at the Opera; there will never be anything better than the Marx brothers. The quote I live by is part of a longer quote by Walt Disney: "keep moving forward". When we were high school freshmen we had to write letters to our senior selves that we wouldn't be able to open until our graduation day. My best friend Hannah simply wrote that quote, and it's always stuck with me. We're always growing and changing, so sometimes I have to remind myself of that.
